Rethink community engagement

As part of Elevated Chicago’s mission—to improve the built environment for greater racial equity, climate resilience, health, and arts and culture outcomes—our coalition of 17 organizations believes there is a real opportunity to rethink community engagement.

These Community Engagement Principles and Recommendations are for leaders and practitioners working on the front lines of community engagement – including local government and planning agencies; development, architectural and engineering firms; and community-based organizations. While there is an emphasis on the built environment, the principles herein are intended to be applicable in a variety of contexts, from participatory budgeting to planning a community garden or mural project.
